Album Review: Jay Prince "BeFor Our Time"
East London emcee, vocalist, and producer Jay Prince wasted no time this year by dropping his first project of 2015, BeFor Our Time. The project his the wunderkind’s much anticipated release following his acclaimed MellowVation which was released in late 2013. The production on BeFor is largely handled by Jay Prince himself with the exception of one song by Jordan James and a few tracks produced by legendary German producer, IAMNOBODI.
MellowVation certainly set a personal standard for Prince as well as every other artist waiting to through his hat in the ring. The project created a lot of buzz and even drew the attention of Los Angeles beat collective Soulection who included the track ‘All You’ on their Stüssy compilation last year.
Personally, I was not even aware of this project until a couple days before it was released (I was sleeping, I know). However, it certainly does not disappoint. Jay Prince has a gift for understanding good song structure and arrangement. The lyrics are on point, as I always look for, even in this day and age when lyricism has fallen to the wayside. The hooks on this project are also VERY crisp and clean, especially on ‘Polaroids’ a head nod inducing track which features from what I can discern a clever chop of Minnie Riperton’s ‘Inside My Love’ which certainly gives this young man kudos in my book.
Overall, I am really enjoying what the Londoner is doing with his success. He continues to enlist high quality production as well as advance his production skills to become a very well rounded artist. I honestly want all of you to download this FREE project and pass it around to all of your friends to effectively put them on game. The only thing about this project is that I don’t like is that it is still winter and it makes me want to jump in the car and cruise down the highway, blasting it on my radio with the sunroof down…. Oh wait, I can still do that. I live in California….. it’s 79°F degrees outside.
